Originally constructed circa 1885, 8 Washington Avenue stands as one of Westport's finest examples of High Victorian Gothic architecture. Largely untouched for generations, the residence presented a rare opportunity to thoughtfully preserve a historic landmark while adapting it for contemporary living.
The home was meticulously rebuilt from the inside out, replacing every major mechanical system while restoring its architectural integrity. Among the most significant interventions was the removal of the original chimney and the installation of an entirely new high-efficiency HVAC system, complete with new ductwork discreetly integrated throughout the home—a highly complex undertaking given the scale, age, and historic construction of the property. The floor plan was carefully reimagined to enhance both function and flow, including the addition of a second-floor bathroom and the creation of a versatile third-floor retreat that can serve as a primary suite, guest quarters, home office, or media space.
At the heart of the home, a bespoke Smallbone kitchen anchors the living spaces, appointed with AKDO marble, a La Cornue range, SKS refrigeration, and custom millwork. Six-inch character-grade hardwood flooring extends throughout, complemented by thoughtfully curated finishes that balance timeless craftsmanship with understated luxury. The legal accessory dwelling above the garage was also completely transformed into an independent living space featuring a new kitchen, bath, HVAC system, and refined interior finishes.
Outside, the property was reimagined to improve both functionality and first impressions. The driveway and landscape design were strategically repositioned to establish a clear, private arrival sequence, eliminating the ambiguity created by the previous approach and the appearance of a shared driveway. Acquired off-market, this small, neglected single-family residence was comprehensively renovated inside and out — transforming it into one of the most charming homes on the street while preserving its original architectural character.
The renovation included new siding, roofing, select window replacements, a complete redesign of the kitchen and bathrooms, and significant improvements to the home's functionality and flow. Through strategic reconfiguration within the existing footprint, an additional bedroom and bathroom were added, significantly increasing usability and market value.
The project also involved a ground-up mechanical overhaul — installing a new HVAC system with full ductwork in a home that had no prior central air, along with updated plumbing and electrical systems brought fully up to current standards.
This project timeline was four months from close-to-close.
The result was a fully reimagined home that delivered meaningful value creation through thoughtful spatial planning rather than square footage.

PROJECT DETAILS:
Off-market acquisition and full interior redevelopment of a dated Fairfield residence completed within a three-month timeline from purchase through sale.
The project included a redesigned kitchen with the opening of a primary wall to improve flow and connectivity, fully renovated bathrooms, removal of dated wallpaper with skim-coated walls throughout, upgraded flooring, lighting, and finish improvements, as well as replacement of the existing oil heating system with a high-efficiency electric heat pump.
Additional work included water intrusion remediation, regrading, and the transformation of an underutilized lower level into a functional extension of the home.
The renovation focused on modernizing the property while preserving its underlying character, repositioning the home through thoughtful design, improved livability, and efficient execution.
