A Home Above

8 WASHINGTON AVENUE
WESTPORT, CONNECTICUT

An existing apartment above the garage offered something increasingly valuable: a separate place to live within the property. The value just needed to be unlocked.

The Challenge

The apartment above the detached garage offered valuable additional living space, but years without meaningful updates had left it feeling dated and disconnected from the rest of the property.

The opportunity was to turn it into a fully realized independent living space — updating the kitchen and bathroom, improving the finishes, lighting and flooring, and adding a new HVAC system so the apartment could function comfortably on its own.

The Work

The apartment was in need of a top-to-bottom refresh —with LVT flooring, lighting and HVAC and a considered palette.

The kitchen and bathroom were completely renovated with new cabinetry, appliances, fixtures and finishes.

New cabinetry, appliances, fixtures and tile work transformed the kitchen and bathroom into a cohesive, comfortable living space.

The Reveal

What had been a dated apartment above the garage now feels like a complete home of its own — comfortable, cohesive and entirely separate from the main house.

As a legal ADU, it adds meaningful flexibility to the property, creating a place for guests, extended family or independent living while making better use of space that was already there.

KITCHEN CLOSE-UP

The kitchen was elevated with new appliances, cabinetry, countertops and tile work.
