Finding the Flow

8 WASHINGTON AVENUE
WESTPORT, CONNECTICUT

An undersized kitchen became the starting point for rethinking the entire first-floor flow — opening sightlines, improving circulation and making better use of the existing footprint.

The Challenge

The original kitchen was undersized for the scale of the home, with limited workspace and storage along with poor circulation.

Multiple oversized windows further constrained the layout by consuming valuable wall space.

UNDERSIZED KITCHEN            EXPANDED + CONNECTED

The Work

The kitchen expanded into adjacent space, creating room for a central island and significantly more storage.

Walls were opened, windows removed or resized, and underused areas incorporated into the new layout to improve circulation and connection.

ADDED CURVED OPENINGS TO CONNECT ROOMS

The Reveal

A kitchen with the scale and presence the home called for, while remaining connected to its historic character.

The new layout created significantly more workspace and storage while improving circulation throughout the first floor.

Curved openings soften the transitions between spaces, allowing the kitchen to feel connected to the surrounding rooms while each retains its own identity.

CRAFT + CHARACTER

LIGHT + FUNCTION

Smallbone cabinetry, AKDO marble and a La Cornue range bring craftsmanship and character to the new kitchen.

The smaller picture window balances natural light and garden views with the cabinetry and workspace the new kitchen required.
